Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Asia's premier wildlife reserves. Located in the subtropical lowlands of south-central Nepal, the park covers an area of 932 square kilometers and is home to endangered species including the one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tiger, and gharial crocodile. The park offers a completely different experience from the mountain regions, with dense forests, grasslands, and the Rapti and Narayani rivers. The best time to visit Chitwan is from October to March when the weather is pleasant and dry, making wildlife spotting easier. February and March are particularly good for wildlife sightings as animals come out to water sources. Avoid the monsoon season (June-September) when the park is often closed due to flooding.
Chitwan is located about 150 km southwest of Kathmandu in the Terai plains.
Flights to Bharatpur Airport from Kathmandu take about 25 minutes. The airport is about 20 km from Sauraha, the main tourist area (30-40 minutes drive).
Tourist buses from Kathmandu or Pokhara take 5-6 hours. Most hotels and resorts offer pickup services from the bus stop. Private cars and shared jeeps are also available.
