Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros
Chitwan shelters one of the world's largest populations of the greater one-horned rhino, and seeing one graze in the tall elephant grass is the park's signature thrill. Early-morning jeep and canoe trips offer the best odds, often spotting them near the Rapti and Narayani rivers. Decades of anti-poaching work have brought the population back from the brink, making sightings reliably common.
