The most iconic landmarks, temples, viewpoints, and cultural sites in Annapurna Circuit, Nepal — what makes each one special and how to visit.
At 4,130m the trail opens into a glacial amphitheatre ringed by Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and the fishtail spire of Machhapuchhre. Standing in the sanctuary at dawn, with peaks burning orange on every side, is the emotional high point of the entire region. The classic route in from Pokhara via Chhomrong and the bamboo forests takes most trekkers 7 to 11 days round trip.
A short, accessible pre-dawn climb from Ghorepani to 3,210m delivers one of Nepal's most famous sunrises, with the whole Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges lighting up in sequence. It is the heart of the Ghorepani-Ghandruk loop, doable in 4 to 5 days, making it the best taste of the region for those short on time. The rhododendron forest along the way blazes red and pink in March and April.
The 5,416m crux of the Annapurna Circuit is the highest point most trekkers will ever walk to, crossed in a long, cold, pre-dawn push from Thorong Phedi or High Camp. Reaching the prayer-flag-draped cairn at the top, with Annapurna and Dhaulagiri behind and the desert of Mustang ahead, is a genuine mountaineering rite of passage. Acclimatisation in Manang beforehand is essential to cross safely.
A stone-paved Gurung village clinging to a ridge with grandstand views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre, Ghandruk is the cultural showpiece of the lower trail. Slate-roofed houses, a small Gurung museum and welcoming tea houses make it a favourite first or last night for trekkers. It is reachable by jeep or a gentle day's walk, so even non-trekkers can experience a classic mountain village.
At 3,710m on the far side of Thorong La, Muktinath is a rare sacred site holy to both Hindus and Buddhists, famous for its 108 stone water spouts and an eternal natural flame. Pilgrims and trekkers alike come to bathe in the icy spouts for spiritual merit against a backdrop of Dhaulagiri and the arid Mustang valley. It can also be reached by road from Jomsom for those not crossing the pass.
One of the highest large lakes in the world at around 4,920m, Tilicho is a startling turquoise sheet hemmed in by ice and scree, reached on a side trip from Manang along an exposed landslide-prone trail. The detour adds two to three demanding days but rewards with raw, high-altitude scenery few other treks can match. Most people visit it as an acclimatisation and bucket-list add-on before tackling Thorong La.
