The widest choice of tea houses in the region, from simple twin rooms to comfortable lodges with hot showers, bakeries and Wi-Fi. Namche is the natural acclimatisation base and the best-equipped overnight stop on the trail.
The first and last overnight for most trekkers, clustered around the airport. Lodges here are convenient for catching early flights and offer warm dining rooms to celebrate the trek's end. Quality ranges from basic to fairly comfortable.
Lodges beside the famous monastery, with some of the most dramatic dining-room views on the trail. Nearby Deboche, just below in the trees, is slightly quieter and warmer at night. A magical place to wake up to Ama Dablam.
A key second acclimatisation stop in a windswept high valley at around 4,410 m. Lodges here are accustomed to trekkers resting before the push higher, with cosy stove-heated dining rooms. The side hike up Nangkartshang aids acclimatisation.
The highest and most basic accommodation on the EBC route at around 5,180 m, used as the launch point for Kala Patthar and Base Camp. Rooms are cold and spartan, and most people stay just one night. Bring a warm sleeping bag regardless of season.
A small, cold settlement at around 4,940 m, the last stop before Gorak Shep. Lodges are simple and fill quickly in peak season, so an early arrival or pre-booking helps. The dining room stove is the social heart of the evening.
Lakeside lodges beside the turquoise Gokyo lakes, a serene base for climbing Gokyo Ri. Quieter than the main EBC corridor, with surprisingly good food given the remoteness. A favourite for trekkers seeking solitude.
A low, comfortable riverside village on the first day's walk from Lukla, at around 2,610 m. Lodges here are warmer and better-oxygenated than higher stops, making for an easy first night. Many sit right beside the Dudh Koshi.
Traditional Sherpa villages on the acclimatisation loop above Namche, home to the famous green-roofed monastery and Hillary's school and hospital. Staying here is a more authentic, less touristy experience. Views of Ama Dablam and Khumbila are superb.
Perched on a ridge above Namche near Syangboche, this is the upmarket option for those wanting comfort with a famous Everest panorama from the terrace. It is a popular acclimatisation day-trip even for trekkers not staying overnight. Rooms are pricier than tea houses.
