Every morning of the season, the sky above Phewa Lake fills with slow-turning wings — dozens of them, spiralling on the same thermals as the black kites (the birds, who invented this). Paragliding in Pokhara is one of the cheapest, easiest, most spectacular tandem flights on earth: the Annapurnas on the horizon, the fishtail peak of Machhapuchhre dead ahead, and the lake glittering under your boots. Here's everything a first-timer needs.
What actually happens
The ritual is well-oiled after two decades of commercial flying here: morning pickup from Lakeside, a 30-minute jeep up to the Sarangkot launch site (the same ridge as the famous sunrise), a five-minute briefing, harness on, and then — the only part requiring anything from you — a few committed running steps as the wing inflates, and the ground simply lets go. From there your pilot works the thermals, climbing in slow circles with the kites and eagles, before a long float down to the landing zone by the lake. Standard flights run 20-30 minutes; ask for gentle if you're nervous, or "acro" if you want your stomach relocated.
Takeoff, flight and landing at Sarangkot (Sudip Basnet)What it costs
Roughly USD 80-100 for the standard tandem, typically including transport, insurance, and often the GoPro package (sometimes USD 10-20 extra — the photos are genuinely worth it, since your hands will be busy holding on at takeoff). Longer flights and cross-country options price up from there. It's a splurge against the $30-a-day baseline — budget it as its own envelope, and verify current prices; competition keeps them honest.
When to fly
| Season | Flying | Views |
|---|---|---|
| Oct-Nov | Prime — stable air | Post-monsoon crystal |
| Dec-Feb | Excellent, cooler | Crisp, clear |
| Mar-Apr | Good thermals | Warming, some haze |
| May-Jun | Flyable, hotter | Hazier |
| Jul-Aug (monsoon) | Mostly shut — what works instead | — |
Morning slots (roughly 9:30-12:00) fly smoothest — book the first slot of your first Pokhara day, so weather delays have days to resolve. The season logic mirrors the trekking calendar (the full picture).
Safety, honestly
Pokhara is a world-scale commercial tandem site — thousands of flights a season, licensed pilots, regulated operators — and also an adventure sport in real mountains. The practical filter:
- Book an established operator (Lakeside is full of agencies; the good ones are happy to answer questions).
- Ask directly: Is my pilot licensed? What insurance covers me? What's your weather-delay policy?
- Respect the wait — pilots who postpone for conditions are the ones you want.
- Check your own travel insurance covers paragliding — many base policies exclude it; add the adventure rider.
- Weight limits (roughly 15-100 kg, operator-dependent) and honest health disclosure apply.
Sarangkot works double shifts — sunrise crowds at dawn, paraglider launches by mid-morning
Making a day of it
The classic combination: Sarangkot sunrise first, fly mid-morning — you're already on the ridge, and the two experiences share a taxi. Land by the lake, spend the afternoon on a boat or in the cafes, and you've had Pokhara's greatest hits in a single day. Couples note: tandem means separate wings, but pilots happily fly formation for the photos (the romance angle).
What it actually feels like
The honest preview, because most first-timers' fear is miscalibrated: takeoff is the only adrenaline moment — three or four committed steps as the wing loads, and then the ground drops away with none of the stomach-lurch of a rollercoaster. Flight itself is startlingly calm: you're seated in what amounts to a fabric armchair, the wind is a steady conversation, and the pilot behind you narrates peaks like a taxi driver with an 8,000-metre commute. Thermals feel like a slow elevator; the kites sharing your column of air feel like colleagues. Motion-sensitive flyers should eat light, skip the acro option, and tell the pilot early — gentle flying is a standard request. And landing is a walk-off: a long final glide, a flare, and two steps on the grass by the lake. The universal post-flight report isn't "terrifying" — it's "why was that so peaceful?"
Beyond the standard tandem
The menu runs deeper than the 25-minute classic: cross-country flights (an hour-plus, ranging along the Annapurna foothills) for the converted, parahawking-style raptor encounters where offered (verify ethics and availability locally), and ultralight aircraft from the airport side for those who'd rather the engine did the flying. Zip-lining and bungee round out Pokhara's adrenaline card — the town has quietly become South Asia's adventure-sports capital, one reason it anchors every itinerary we build.
If you get hooked
Pokhara is also one of Asia's cheapest places to learn — multi-day beginner courses through licensed schools turn passengers into pilots, and the season is long. For most travelers though, the tandem is the perfect dose: all of the sky, none of the homework.
One flight explains why the kites circle here all day, and why so many travelers rank these twenty-five minutes above whole days of the trip. Put it on the Pokhara itinerary, pair it with the sunrise, and let the Annapurnas reorganise your sense of scale. Plan the wider trip with our plan your Nepal trip hub.
